Learning, laughing, or shaking with fear – Podcasts are pretty cool.

I like podcasts a lot. It took a bit of convincing for me to delve into the bottomless trove of archived rhetoric, but once I had popped, as the infamous Pringles commercial told us, I was entirely unable to stop.

I’ve gathered a few of my favorite podcasts together, as an offering to the internet gods, and present to you my favorite time passers!

Hello From The Magic Tavern

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦◊◊

A funny podcast that serializes (Get it?) the life of a man named Arney, who fell through a dimensional rift, located behind a dimensional rift, into a magical land called Foon. Arney hosts the podcast, interview style, along with his boon-companions Usidore The Blue, a wizard with a very long name, and a talking badger named Chunt.

Before and after every podcast, a disembodied voice will try to assure you that the events that occurred during the show were definitely not real, but he seems pretty shady if you ask me.

Folks who enjoy Serial, or Cops, or really any real crime stories will enjoy this show a lot! The host of the show, Phoebe Judge, tells the stories of crimes of various degrees that have occurred all over the country. Touching on cases like the Venus Fly Trap poaching problem in North Carolina, to the Brownie Lady in San Fransisco, the stories span so many subjects and are so interesting that you’ll be coming back each week once you’ve caught up on their catalog.

Indoor Kids

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦◊◊

Video game lovers rejoice! We’ve found a few of our own! The indoor kids is an awesome podcast, hosted by comedian Kumail Nanjiani, and his wife Emily V Gordan, and they sometimes even have their cat Bagel! On the show, guests such as comedians, writers, collectors, and people with all sorts of crazy backgrounds, come together to talk about video games!

The hosts do their best to take an objective view on the games, and since the episodes go so far back, you can hear their initial reactions to games like skyrim and gears of war 2. They talk about all sorts of awesome games, from indie to triple A, and they talk about a lot of things that most people don’t see. I’d definitely give this one a shot if you love gaming!

Unfortunately, these guys are currently on haiatus, and there hasn’t been an update on when they would come back. But the good news is that there are over 200 episodes for you to listen to while you wait for them to come back!

Cracked

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦♦◊

If you like people who think philosophically, and offer ideas that are out of the box, then this is the show for you! Cracked has been called the poor man’s magazine, and the rich man’s buzzfeed, but if you tune into cracked’s discussions, you just might learn something.

I really enjoy this one, the discussions are funny, but informative, and really make you think. The host is the editor-in-chief of cracked.com, and he is joined week to week by different writers from cracked, and they often have interviews with people from the fields they are talking about.

Comedy Bang Bang

Episodes to date of post: 467

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦◊◊◊◊

An improv talk show, and one of the funniest shows I know. Host, Scott Aukerman brings on guests every week, sometimes comedians, sometimes musicians, sometimes comedians pretending to be other people. I’d say the only downside to this podcast, is that you probably shouldn’t just jump in at the most current episode. While most episodes can stand by themselves, there are so many inside jokes and phrases that have accumulated over the 7 years of the shows life, that it makes it so much funnier to start from the beginning!

How did this get made

Episodes to date of post: 143

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦◊◊◊

A podcast that delves into the good stuff. How, and why, did crappy movies get made!? Hosted by Jason Mantzoukas, Paul Scheer, and June Raphael, each week they post a short call to action episode, where they tell you which movie they are going to be talking about, then a few days later, they go ahead and watch it!

It’s like a book club for crappy movies, and we all know how much you love crappy movies!

The Black Tapes

Episodes to date of post: 40

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦♦♦

An (unfortunately) fictional podcast that delves into the unknown. It follows Alex Reagan, a radio journalist, who stumbled into the wrong story at the wrong time. After encountering several paranormal happenings, she meets a man named Dr. Strand, who is the head of the Strand Institute, which seeks to disprove the paranormal. Alex stumbles upon a wall of black tapes, that contain Strand’s unsolved cases, and upon further investigation, she finds that they may linked.

The X-Files Files

Episodes to date of post: 57

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦♦◊

This is another podcast, hosted by Kumail Nanjiani (What can I say? I love the guy!) This time, as you can probably gather from the title, he is talking about the X-Files. Kumail is a huge X-files junky, and after starting this podcast, was offered a role on the new reboot of the show! Each episode, he and his guests discuss various episodes and all that happen, as well as talking about the writers, and various actors on that weeks episode. Great show if you love the X-files, great show if you’ve never seen it!

This is another awesome show if you want to learn. Don’t let the 879 episodes scare you, a lot of them are only 5-10 min, but even in those few minutes they manage to pop out some pretty fascinating info! I’d at least give a few episodes a shot if you are at all interested, I mean, it will only cost a few min!

Lore

Episodes to date of post: 41

Listenability around your friends and family: ♦♦♦♦♦

This show is a lot like criminal, in that it doesn’t just focus on one story. And it is similar to The Black Tapes, in that it speaks of the supernatural. But this show is pretty awesome, because it is a well researched catalog of various folk lore from around the world.

The host, Aaron Mahnke, tells a story each week of people, places and things that have bizarre, and incredible backstories, from ghosts to the Wendigo, there is something in there for everyone!

The no sleep podcast

This podcast is a narration of stories from Reddit’s r/nosleep. Each episode has one story, narrated by David Cummings, as well as an additional story, narrated by a guest narrator. Each is pretty frightening, and worth a listen, if you mind sleeping with one eye open!
